Our Team
We are a team of six WUR students working together with the Scape Foundation on a project about phytoremediation in urban areas. Our multi-disciplinary team consists of biologists and plant scientists with different specializations, and we are enthusiastic about using plants to clean cities.
Hazel van Waijjen - Team Manager
Hello, I am Hazel, and I excited to be the Manager of this team. I study Plant Biotechnology and therefore my main interest in this project lies in the fundamental principles of phytoremediation. On the other hand, I am really interested in the application of phytoremediation in society, and I hope this project will contribute to the development of greener cities!
I contribute enthusiasm, creativity, decision making and implementation to the team.
Almudena Pelaez Ordoñez - Controller
Hello, I am Almudena. I study Plant Biotechnology and I am excited to take part of this project. I have heard about phytoremediation before, and I was interested on it because it is a sustainable way to face a big problem such as contamination. I want to learn a lot about this topic and that is what motivates me to take part on it.
I can bring to the team a positive attitude, hard work and creativity.
Nika van den Meiracker - Secretary
My name is Nika van den Meiracker. I am the Secretary of the team. During my study in Biology (BSc and MSc), I focussed on biodiversity, ecology and conservation of nature and plants in specific. My interest in this project is therefore mostly related to (stimulation of) biodiversity. Additionally, I hope to apply my knowledge on native plant species in creating a usable product.
I critically check structure, content, grammar and spelling of texts and am not easily satisfied. Besides, I hope to bring enthusiasm and commitment to the team.
Marieke Hilgers - Member
My name is Marieke Hilgers and in September 2020 I started my MSc Plant Biotechnology at Wageningen university. My position in the group is a group member which makes me responsible for the content. I am mainly a shaper and a team worker. I hope to bring to a comfortable atmosphere and good working environment where people can express their creativity and ideas. I am really intrigued by the possibility of decontaminating the environment by using plants, which explains my interest in the project. I think more effort need to be made to create a sustainable relationship between people and ecosystems.
Wouter Israel - Member
Hello, my name is Wouter Israel. Over the last couple of years during my BSc Biology and MSc Plant Sciences I have learned a lot about the fundamentals of nature and I am looking forward to finally apply that knowledge in this project. During my BSc Thesis I did research on phytoremediation by studying the model organism for heavy metal hyperaccumulation.
I like to focus on the practical parts of the project. Furthermore, I hope to bring positive energy to the team.
